Mirus Gallery is pleased to present "My Kind of Town" by Chicago-based stencil artist David Soukup (US) curated by gallery Director, Jennifer A. Darland. The opening reception will take place from 7 to 10 p.m. on Friday, March 10 and will be on view through April 22, 2017. The artist will be in attendance during opening reception.
From the Artist: “My Kind of Town” takes inspiration from the famous Frank Sinatra song, which offers praises [to] the city, and continues exploration into a deep-seated love affair with the City of Chicago. The work is an incredibly personal recollection of my daily life in the city, and the ever-changing urban landscape as Chicago continues to re-invent itself, while simultaneously stripping down the character, charm, and industrial facades of an early 20th century to make way for a more modern, although a less-inspired reincarnation. This body of work has transpired over three years time, with a mindful attention to detail and continued exploration of the stencil medium.
Born in 1985, and currently based in Chicago, Illinois (US). Soukup has garnered international attention as the winner of the World Stencil Prize in 2013, in Sydney, Australia. He is a critically acclaimed stencil artist known for his precisely rendered mixed media stencil works that explore the urban landscape with steadfast precision and the gritty details from city life. His reputation for rich-textured, finger-numbing-hand-cut stencil paintings straddle the boundaries between photo-realism and that of the urban street art movement, drawing inspiration from his daily exploration and the hidden beauty of Chicago. His paintings have been showcased in galleries and shows all over the world, published in numerous magazines and websites, and featured in several television and feature film productions.
