Recent Work by Bill Shupp and Maura Carta

The Bay Area is teeming with artists of all kinds, and an eclectic mix can be found at Gallery House, the Bay Area's oldest artist cooperative.  A colorful exhibition of photographs by Bill Shupp and paintings by Maura Carta will run from May 31st until June 25, 2016.  A public reception is scheduled for Friday, June 3, from 6-8 p.m at 320 S. California Ave in Palo Alto.

Both Maura and Bill reflect their love of nature, color and composition in their work.

Bill Shupp is a fine art landscape photographer with a passion for night sky and timelapse photography. His work has been featured on several sites including The Huffington Post, Smithsonian Science, and the Flickr Blog.  He has also had images published in Digital Photographer magazine, and won Outdoor Photographer magazine's "The American Landscape 2014" competition (second place).  His goal is is to share the beauty that surrounds us, day or night, though fine art prints and short, non-narrative films.

Maura spends her days painting models, interiors, and roaming the Bay Area for landscapes to paint.  Working only from life, her portraits are done over a period of three weeks - about four hours per sitting.  Her landscapes, typically three or four visits to the same spot, begin with a grisaille and are followed the next days with multiple layers of translucent paint.  'I really want my paintings to glow.  Light reflects back from each layer of paint, so though my method is slow, I like the potential results.  Working from life can be challenging - the light is always shifting, the model is never in the exact spot as the previous sitting, and someone always drives off in the car I just started painting.  But it's so worth it when on occasion it all comes together for me, and I have created another world my eyes can enter into.'

Gallery House is located at 320 S. California Ave, Palo alto, CA. (entrance through Printer’s Cafe). Call (650) 326-1668. Regular gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m t
