Nigel Cheney: Decorated

City:

Categories:

Date:
Saturday, 9 September 2017 to Sunday, 5 November 2017

Decorated is an ongoing research project that explores the
relationships between commemoration and memory through
textiles. This body of work is inspired by Cheney’s family origin
at Naseby, Northamptonshire and their connection with the
war memorial in the village.

Naseby’s copy of the Menin Gate Lion bears the name of
11 servicemen who did not survive the war and one of Cheney’s
uncles devoted many years of his life to researching them.
Decorated tells the story of these men and brings them to
life in the gallery.

Cheney exploits both hand craft, hand operated and computer
aided manufacture in textiles. Complex grounds are built from
layers of scans of hand drawn images, photography, digital
manipulations, pattern and the contrasts of stitch qualities.

Artist ( Description ):

Nigel Cheney has a BA in Textiles, with Commendation in Art History and an MA in Textiles. He is a lecturer in Embroidered Textiles at NCAD and has been the Republic of Ireland Selector for the Lódz Tapestry Triennale, Poland, since 2000.

He has produced unusual textile art for a wide array of mediums including fashion, interiors, commissions and gallery work. Nigel strives to combine historical techniques such as blackwork, voiding, appliqué, and hand stitches with the more contemporary digital media, transfer prints and hand painted cloth. The result is often a juxtaposition of harmony and discord.
