Tasteless Restroom
Phil Allen’s show will essentially be representations of redundant ideas and blind alleys. An off-loading of material that was destined for the scrapheap even before the paint was dry.
Painting is not a craft it’s a proposition, anything goes these days, but directness, even if it is the expression of confusion and appears pointless, is particularly valuable. Remember that the unconscious functions on redundancies and when themes return, you know something is insisting.
As a contemporary artist you have two options; gamble on coming up with something novel and get lucky or do something that has intensity but may be irrelevant.
The exhibition will launch with a Private View on Wednesday 21 September from 6pm. The artist will also be in conversation with the directors of DOLPH about his response to the brief as well as discussing the broader exchanges and dialogues the project initiates on Thursday 29 September from 7pm.
