In November, Kate Owens will respond to the DOLPH brief with the exhibition, Astral Flesh 2-Way Stretch. Owens will bring together finished works and test pieces made over the past three years in order to tell the story of her ever-adapting practice. Alongside her exhibition, Owens will be working with children from Hitherfield Primary School dance club to develop new research material. She says:
“My performative practice combines living with working. I have a studio in my house and day-to-day I do a range of physical things in and out of this space; cooking, exercising, looking after my kids etc. The work happens in amongst these activities: sometimes I appear to be shopping but actually I’m working and shopping simultaneously. Wherever possible, my efforts have a dual purpose. This 2-way stretch has become my creative technique alongside being an effective method of survival.
During the past three years I’ve primarily been working with fabric. The material’s ability to expand and contract suits my working environment, while its potential to be transformed allows the work to stretch across the live/work divide; off-cuts and samples regularly become clothing and furnishings for family and friends.”
The exhibition will launch with a PV and Artist’s Talk on Wednesday 8th November in which Owens will discuss her response to the brief. For more information contact: info@dolphprojects.com
