After spending summer and early fall participating in four artist residencies across North America, Ralph Pugay returns for his second solo exhibition at Upfor. In addition to the vibrant paintings Pugay is known for, the exhibition includes limited-edition screen prints begun at Atelier Circulaire in Montreal, Canada, as well as a series of drawings created during his time at the Rauschenberg Residency at Captiva, Florida and the Joan Mitchell Center in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Ralph Pugay holds an MFA in Contemporary Art Practice from Portland State University and is based in Portland, Oregon. In summer and fall of 2018, he was artist in residence with the Joan Mitchell Foundation in New Orleans, LA; the Rauschenberg Foundation at Captiva, FL; Atelier Circulaire in Montreal, ON and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, IL. He is also a residency graduate of the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine and the Vermont Studio Center. Pugay’s awards include a Betty Bowen Award from the Seattle Art Museum, Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters and Sculptors Award, Hallie Ford Rauschenberg Residency Fellowship and an Oregon Arts Commission Fellowship. Major solo exhibitions were held at Seattle Art Museum (WA), Upfor (Portland, OR), Vox Populi (Philadelphia, PA) and FAB Gallery (Richmond, VA), among others. Pugay was a visiting faculty member at Virginia Commonwealth University and is the James DePriest Visiting Professor of Art at Portland State University.
