Ben Buswell employs laborious surface embellishments to emphasizes the material qualities of new photo-based and fused glass sculptures.

Photo-based sculptures feature close-up images of obsidian, a naturally occurring volcanic glass, taken by Buswell at the Newberry National Volcanic Monument in Oregon. The glossy emulsion layer of each photograph is embellished by the artist with an accumulation of scratches and presented in an unusually shaped frame. For the fused glass sculptures, Buswell carefully pressed an embroidered US flag into a bed of white frit (silica granules), then heat fused the frit, resulting in a crystalline debossment.
