Before Jim Murphy became a painter, he was a talented musician. Starting in the early 1960’s, Jim played in a band called “The Town Criers” in his hometown of Miller Place on Long Island, NY. The “Criers” played songs by the Rolling Stones, Young Rascals, Loving Spoonful and many of their favorites at that time. Then there was a lull, of about 35 years, when Jim didn't play in a band. He played guitar in his spare time while earning a degree in art from Keene State College. Jim raised a family while developing twin careers in painting, and also as a nurse at the Cheshire Medical Center, Keene. Jim and his wife, Diane, have three children. Nora, 30, is a graduate student at the University of Pittsburgh; Emily, 28, is a potter in Chicago; and Jeff, the youngest, is a bass player and entrepreneur. Jim still lives and works in Keene, where the beautiful Monadnock landscape continues to inspire his paintings and his music.
