LAPADA Art & Antiques Fair

The collection of Post- Modern, Modern & Contemporary British Masters shown at this year’s LAPADA Art & Antiques Fair is a microcosm of works Tanya Baxter Contemporary sources for international corporate and private collectors. Pieces featured include John Hoyland’s monumental work Shutter 1976, Francis Bacon’s Seated Figure 1977, Frank Auerbach’s Study from the Studio 1986, Damien Hirst’s Minnie, Sean Scully’s Untitled 1980 and David Hockney’s Celia in a Pink Chemise 1973 along with a selection of works by Bridget Riley and Tracey Emin. As well as work by established Asian artists including Zeng Chuanxing’s Red Paper Bride.

With prices rising, art works are now a solid asset for any portfolio, the importance of confident decisions about the investment and aesthetic qualities is vital. Records continue to be set at auction houses in 2018, including a new record for a David Hockney painting when Pacific Coast Highway and Santa Monica was bought for $28.5 million in early May.
Sotheby’s Contemporary Art sale on 26th June, 2018 made £110,239,500 and was led by Lucian Freud’s Portrait on White Cover which soared to £22.5 million; with three works by Jean-Michel Basquiat making £26.7 million, including Untitled that rose to £14.7 million. Other strong results include David Hockney’s Double East Yorkshire 1998 for £11.28million, Peter Doig’s Daytime Astronomy (Grasshopper) 1998-8 for £7.67million, Yves Klein’s Untitled Anthropometry 1962 for £6.77million, Francis Bacon’s Study of a Figure 1954 for £3.15million, Cecily Brown’s The Skin of our Teeth for £3.01million and Alexander Calder’s Untitled 1956 for £2.29 million.
Modern British Art sits in the 20th century category alongside Impressionist and Postwar Art. The upturn and increased interest in British artists such as Hepworth, Riley, Auerbach, Moore and lately of Hoyland, Heath and Davie is widespread. They are becoming popular with both American and Asian collectors. Bridget Riley and Frank Auerbach, both in their late 80s and the demand for their work follows similar trends to that of Freud and Hockney, who are already firmly established in America. Riley’s collector base is largely British and American although she continues to attract European and Asian collectors following her major 2008 retrospective at the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. Her surge in popularity has also impacted her price; she recently set a new record at auction with the sale of DIagional Curve for £4.3million at Christie’s London in 2016. Timothy Taylor’s recent Auerbach exhibition Landscapes & Portraits the first in New York since 2006 follows this artist’s major retrospective at Tate Britain in 2015-6, which has further raised the artist’s profile.
