In Philip Ciolina’s recent work there are glimpses of interior spaces created by a layering of different whites and other images buried, or partially revealed.
The stillness is interrupted by the reflection of scarlet flowers fading into the distance in the picture 'Within Light'. The same stillness is also apparent in the
'Olive tree series', which relate to a poem by Lorca and are taken from repeated drawings of the same olive tree at different times of day or evening. In 2011,
Frank Whitford, writing in the Sunday Times, described Philip Ciolina's Award winning picture 'The White Rose' as, 'Delicate, exquisite, evanescent, suggestive,
in its layering of translucent whites, white and off-whites.’ Hilton Fine Art are pleased to present Philip Ciolina's first solo show in Bath, following his highly
successful exhibition at The Thackeray Gallery, Kensington. Philip Ciolina was born in England into an Anglo Swiss-Italian family. After completing his Post Graduate studies
in Painting at the Royal College of Art in the 70s, the first small group exhibition he was invited to join was 'The Square
and The Circle' which included work by both Ben Nicholson and Victor Pasmore. The picture he showed was a paper-cut made from a single sheet of white paper. From then until now, his pictures remain on an intimate scale. Quiet, composite images are made from drawing objects which are buried,layered, with some things partially revealed.
Awards include, a residency at the International Cite des Arts, Paris, Award for work on paper The New English Art Club, and
in 2011, the Random House Prize in the Sunday Times Watercolour Competition for his picture, 'The White
Rose' , which related to the Four Quartets by TS Eliot.
Commissions include; 'Three doors' Private Collcn London -'The Iris Garden' Private Colln London

His work has been seen widely in the UK , including at the Hayward Gallery, Barbican Arts Centre, Art First, Cork Street,
the Fine Art Society, Bond Street, and the Thackeray Gallery, Kensington. And abroad, in Italy, Germany Spain and the USA.
Collections include, the Young-Mallin Archive, New York, Dulwich College and St Catharine's College, Cambridge.
