Surface Tension features work by artists Sam Hodge, Andy D’Cruz and Marcia Teusink. The three artists share a fascination with the idea of surface tension in its scientific meaning (the elastic-like force on the surface of a liquid) and its more artistic and poetic implications (surfaces of paintings and drawings, tensions in materials, tensions between objects), and they explore these themes across multiple media.

Sam Hodge’s paintings mimic the process of erosion and sedimentation to create images of emergent complexity. In his graphite drawings, Andy D’Cruz laboriously builds up layer upon layer to create a rich and lustrous surface. Marcia Teusink’s series ‘Fallible Forms’ features found footballs pulled out of the New River, their perfect geometrical forms altered by the water into organic, deflated and abject-looking forms. Together, these artists’ work forms a visual conversation about materiality, perception and time.

Artist ( Description ):

Andy D'Cruz' practice is centred on the manipulation of surfaces and sculptural form to achieve a subtle yet powerful resonance from within the work. Seemingly abstract marks come together to reveal fleeting form and momentary impressions. The works evoke a sense of melancholy as well as an aesthetic harmony embodied in landscape. Rather than depicting an image or a scene, I aim to elicit resonance or subconscious recognition in the viewer through more visceral depictions.

Sam Hodge is an artist concerned with how things are made and how they fall apart. She makes paintings and prints exploring the role of chance and accident in these processes, but is also interested in how we respond to these chance events and try to make sense of them; making collections that give value to the selected and connections that imbue the ambiguous with meaning.

Marcia Teusink's studio practice explores time, materials and the fallibility of perfect forms in an imperfect world. She investigates the way natural forces return our more geometrically-minded industrial designs to softer and more organic forms. Found objects pulled out of a river or picked up on the side of the road share space with collages made from found paper and images and paintings exploring wear and tear.
