An exhibition of classically-referenced, largely-figurative paintings by Hackney WickED Art Prize 2019 competition runner-up artist Beau Gabriel.
Beau Gabriel, who is a Britannia Works-based painter, presents a solo show of recent works that explore the relationship between classical and modern modes of artistic influence and portrayal. Drawing on high Renaissance Mannerism and Instagram celebrities alike, the work probes how the confluence between these forms of representation finds expression through oil on canvas. Portraits of friends provide a more intimate counterpoint, along with scenes from the artist’s imaginary childhood worlds, which blend art-history references with elements of the fantastic.

Artist:
Beau Gabriel is a fine artist working from Britannia Works in Fish Island and was the runner-up of the 2019 Hackney WickED Art Prize competition. He was born in New York City and grew up in its northern suburbs. He studied in Yale University for his undergraduate degree and took his MA in Illustration at the Royal College of Art. His art explores the evolving nature of figurative representation. A fascination with Renaissance and Baroque art pervades his work, merging with the modern world of online influence and self-styling.
