JAMES DODDS - Paintings & Prints

As part of Bircham Gallery’s25^th Anniversary celebratory programme we are delighted to be showing paintings and linocuts by James Dodds who exhibited in our opening show back in Great Bircham 25 years ago.

In this exhibition (in collaboration with Messum’s Fine Art, London) James’ new boat paintings are mostly of Norfolk Crabbers that are being lovingly restored by the Wooden Boat Rescue Trust at Stiffkey on the North Norfolk coast www.rescueboats.com.  Another Norfolk Crabber called ‘Salthouse Altarpiece’ is currently hanging in the ‘Masterpieces: Art & East Anglia’ exhibition at the Sainsbury Centre, one of the most ambitious exhibitions in the region’s history, celebrating the artistic heritage of East Anglia from antiquity through to the present day. James is the youngest living artist to have been included in this exhibition, the oldest being an axe head 700,000 years old. James kindly donated the use of a similar triptych painting to the Rescue Wooden Boats trust to use for the charity’s logo.

Apart from the Norfolk Crabber paintings, one other oil painting which James will be showing is called ‘Stern of the Royal Barge ‘Gloriana’’ built for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee last year.

In 2007 James was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Essex in recognition of his "distinguished contribution to the local community as an artist and defender of our community and natural heritage."
