Nothing to Black

According to traditional Chinese phonology, “Hu Bei Qie” stands for black.

Black is the clue and the characteristic of Yu Ji’s new works. However, the artist is focusing on visual experience and cognition rather than focusing on the color.

The color black has no specific meaning or indication here. It is originated from the silhouette, a common visual experience in our daily life. Yu Ji is curious about the results when familiar subjects are materialized and become dark silhouettes. What will happen if these silhouettes are placed under a new light and in a new space? … Without making any assumption, Yu Ji is expecting an uncertain outcome.

The natural phenomenon becomes controllable as it is now the choice of the artist. More importantly, the black color of silhouettes, which is the vehicle of painting, is a clue and a mechanism of observation related to the field. It develops to be a sort of energy that has perhaps already exceeded the original image and subject. In this sense, Yu Ji’s purpose is to challenge our previous cognition and the existing structure of language.

Therefore, “Hu Bei Qie” shatters all our preconceptions and knowledge about black.
