Color as Energy, Space, & Mass; an international online solo exhibition by Stephen Mauldin opens on November 10 and will continue through December 10, 2021.

As he wrote in his statement, "I have always worked using unconventional methods. This has not been for purposes of being different for different's sake, but in order to express what I want (need?) to express. Consequently, I have made it a habit over the years to play with paint in order to learn more about what it is capable (and not capable) of doing. This has led me to paint on glass, then transfer that paint into "paint assemblages", extrude paint from modified syringes creating webbed paintings that resemble bent, colored wire, and most recently, to sling paint from ultra-fine straight pins, at very high speed, onto canvas. The mark created by doing this just blew me away the first time I made it. Its defining characteristic is electric energy, but the incredibly fine nature of the mark is also striking. I used this mark to address the issues I was dealing with at the time. I then decided to use the mark in an exploration of optical color mixing. I have explored this issue in three series to date."

Artist ( Description ):

I was born in Nashville, Tennessee on July 4, 1952. I spent my childhood living in the country outside Macon, Georgia where I started drawing at the age of about seven and got my first oil painting set at about ten.

During high school, I attended a college preparatory boarding school with an extensive art program and was able to pursue my interest in art, including painting. From there I went to Oklahoma City University where I received a Bachelor of Arts degree with Honors and a major in art in 1974. In 1979, I went to the University of Idaho where I was granted a teaching assistantship and, in 1981, received a Master of Fine Arts degree with a concentration in painting and printmaking.

In 1985, I began teaching in the Continuing Education program at the Pacific Northwest College of Art and, in 1987, at Mt. Hood Community College. Altogether, I taught twenty years at the PNCA and twenty-one at Mt. Hood.

I continue to paint.
