White Walls is pleased to present California Coming Home, a solo exhibition from London based artist Word to Mother. The opening reception will be Saturday, November 09, from 7-11 pm, and the exhibition is free and open to the public for viewing through December 07, 2013.
Word to Mother's new collection of works draws inspiration from a childhood visit to the Golden State in 1996. “When I first visited California it was a time in my life when things were much more simple, for me personally and for society as a whole. Technology was progressing rapidly but was yet to overcomplicate day to day life. People’s actions were still integral to how they were perceived by others. Nowadays people are able to create a persona online of how they would like to be seen by the rest of the world, none of which is necessarily true. These works are my reaction to the dramatically changing social environment in which I find myself.”
Using a soft palette and his unmistakable loose illustrative style to create dreamlike and abstracted compositions of architecture, typography and nostalgic popular icons, Word To Mother invites us to come ‘home’ and share his vision of returning to a simpler and happier time.
London-based artist Word to Mother was born and raised in an English seaside town. After attending art school for illustration, Word to Mother entered into the art world. Word to Mother creates work which combines many influences into uniquely layered paintings, often atop pieces of salvaged wood. Word to Mother has exhibited in both the UK and the US.
White Walls Gallery has worked for a decade to exist as the premiere destination for urban art in the Bay Area. Justin Giarla founded the gallery with a commitment to furthering the urban art movement, drawing directly from street art and graffiti culture. Named for its plain white walls, the gallery takes a backseat to the real focus: the work of our artists.
