“Proud to be a Hero”
New work by Laurina Paperina
Opening reception for the artist: Friday, September 5th, 6 to 8pm
Show is on view through October 18th, 2014
Fouladi Projects is very pleased to present another exciting solo exhibition of new multimedia works by the Italian artist, Laurina Paperina. For this show, she continues her irreverent parodies of celebrity, this time zeroing in on super heroes and pop culture icons. The subjects of her drawings, animations and installations are most often merrily maimed and killed in a myriad of ridiculous ways, executed in an earnest effort to remind us that not only are we all ultimately humans made of the same basic flesh and blood, but also that life goes down much better with an ample helping of humor.
Laurina Paperina (which translates from Italian to English as “Little Laura Little Duck”) grew up in a small town in Italy and immersed herself from a young age in an alternate universe filled with comic books, cartoons and goofy characters. She hungrily gobbled these fantastical media forms up like food and they have since become an intrinsic part of her. Laurina’s alter ego, often indistinguishable from her “regular” self, is, in her own words, a “strange mutant with a human body and duck feet.” She has exhibited extensively throughout Europe, the USA and beyond. Her super power is her ability to create art that ameliorates the abundance of seriousness in the world and makes us smile.
