Sugarlift is excited to announce our next exhibition, a solo show entitled “Textpectations” from artist Lizzie Gill. The opening for the show will be held Friday, November 13, from 7 - 9 pm at Sugarlift in Bushwick (200 Morgan Ave off the Morgan Ave L stop). Beer from our friends at Braven Brewing Company will be served throughout the evening.
“Textpectations” explores the notions of romance in the digital age. Along with technology, online courtship has evolved simultaneously. From the early days of craigslist ads and instant messaging, to texting and Tinder-mania, the way we fall in love has changed to a remarkable extent. For better or for worse, our communication with each other is conducted primarily through a screen, allowing for infinite misinterpretations.
Gill finds inspiration in these pursuits of romantic digital interactions when juxtaposed with images of marriage and love from 1950’s advertising. Her collages and digital paintings utilize pronounced themes of retro Americana--contrasted nostalgically within a contemporary context--to create a world that is sublimely disarming and altogether enchanting.
Lizzie Gill was born in 1989 and grew up in New York State. She graduated from Skidmore College with a B.S. in Fine Art in 2011 and became a co-founder of the Brooklyn Collage Collective in 2013. Her work has been shown in group and solo shows in New York, and is held in private collections all around the world. She is a curator of Sugarlift’s "Cut & Paste" exhibition, which launched in January 2015, and she has been featured in numerous other exhibitions and art fairs with Sugarlift.
Additional information, a press deck, and high-res images are available upon request, and we are happy to arrange an interview or phone call with the artist. Please reach out to siobhan@sugarlift.com with inquiries.
