In June Miriam Davis is exhibiting semi-abstract paintings and metaphorical porcelain figures at Partners Gallery in Mendocino.
When making her small clay sculptures, Davis says, “Ideas and images for work come to me at odd times, often when I am relaxed and receptive. A curious attitude helps me to see what’s there.” As she plays with an image, other characters or objects may appear, and a gesture may change till the image makes sense and is complete and clear enough to work out in clay. Davis hand models the figures in porcelain, hollows them out and puts them back together. Then they are fired and painted with oil paints.
Davis follows a different path in making her paintings. She improvises, using transfer techniques, brushwork, stencils, and oil paint on heavy paper or canvas. “I follow a series of steps, as if using a map with plenty of blank space, till I find myself in interesting country.”
