JTAG welcomes former JTHAR artist in resident Tom Birkner "Wheel of Fortune" installation and Cat Celebrezze " The Binomial Distribution of My 17th Year" A Joint Exhibition Interrupted By An Unexpected Disaster.

Wheel of Fortune is a sculptural array of paintings that’s meant as a portrait of our world - how it looks, the things we do - and most importantly, the people who matter and the people who don’t. Through its hundreds of images of poverty and wealth, work and leisure, law and lawlessness, war and peace, the social dynamics of the 21st century are on display in ways that encompass the dissociated complexities of our times.

The Binomial Distribution of My 17th Year explores the visual contradictions and dismorphia of memoria automatics. It is a series of 365 tiered lamination windows. The first tier of each window is a laminated transparency containing a binomial, a mathematical expression with two terms, represented by my two 1987 memoria automatica: the face of Ronald Reagan and an Old Milwaukee beer can. The second tier of each window consists of laminated transparent images depicting various events of 1987, some personal to me, some historical and global in impact. The third window is an opaque white plane with a one sentence text descriptions of that which my memoria automatica eclipse.

Tom Birkner - Bio

Born in New Jersey in 1966, Tom Birkner exhibits his paintings on a national and international level. His work has been shown in numerous cities such as Newark, New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Milan and Venice. In 2003, he was one of the artists chosen to represent the U.S. in the First Beijing International Bienniale. His work has been reviewed in journals such as Art In America, ART News, Tema Celeste, Flash Art, The New York Times, and The New York Observer. A graduate of Rutgers University with a MFA from Penn State, Tom has taught at Drew University, Madison, NJ; Parsons The New School For Design and is currently an assistant professor of art at The University of Texas at El Paso. He is represented by the Paul Thiebaud Gallery, San Francisco, CA and Gerald Peters Gallery, Santa Fe, NM.

Tom's paintings revolve around the working class towns and suburbs of Post- Industrial America. At the center of this work is a deep concern with how painting - after centuries of focus on the figure - can continue to dynamically depict people and their social surroundings. His work is representational and based on actual people and places, but the formal and compositional qualities of his images greatly depend on non-representational strategies. Balancing chance and accident with intention and discipline, Tom's paintings strive to find new and relevant ways of depicting the world we live in.
