Artist ( Description ):

Opening Season 13 in September is the Haitian-born artist Fabiola Jean-Louis with her series Rewriting History: A Black Ancestral Narrative. This series is about defying expectations by introducing the black female body in a conversation from which she has been absent. Dressing up her black models in Victorian paper gowns and paper props, Jean-Louis’ painterly photographs open up a dialogue about history and identity in relationship to race, paper as currency, and fashion as a class system. Jean-Louis’s consideration of Haitian and American history tie together identity and memory as she uses the past to retell how history has shaped the present. Jean-Louis is based out of the Bronx, NYC and has shown at the Andrew Freedman Home, Bronx, NY; BRIC Rotunda Gallery, Brooklyn, NY; and the DuSable Museum of African American History, Chicago, IL. Jean-Louis has also completed a residency at the Museum of Art and Design in New York, NY. The exhibition is in partnership with Hedspeth Art Consulting. Her residency at Lux will be her first major show on the West Coast.
