Usagi NY introduces IDENTIFY, an immersive site-specific digital/analog installation by a Brooklyn-based artist Alana Aviel. The use of projection mapping in exhibited works facilitates the exchange of perceptual qualities between the elements of reality and the virtual, integrating static structures with multidisciplinary performances that include spoken word, experimental music, and contemporary dance. The IDENTIFY Performance Series will take place on March 19th, April 2nd, and April 9th.
IDENTIFY seeks to offer a novel, affirming approach to selfhood in a world alternatively enriched and oppressed by virtual reality and explores the possibilities for non-commercial forms of expression in built environments. IDENTIFY functions both as its result and its reenactment, highlighting creative collaboration and manipulation of material to reveal the journey of the objects on display. By creating a liminal space in which technology, the body and space intersect to form experiences unique to each viewer, Alana Aviel reframes the contemplation of art as active and participatory. All visitors are encouraged to interact with each of the seven pieces that comprise the exhibition from a place of vulnerability and wonder.
Alana Aviel is a New-York based artist/architect whose body of work reflects the intersection of analog and digital, drawing on her traditional training in the design methods of architecture and nods to the dynamic visual aspects of film.
