Workshop: Spice Girls – an introduction to natural spice dyes with Ayesha Sureya

Inspired by ancestral knowledge and food as a cultural archive, join artist and designer Ayesha Sureya in this workshop where we will transform spices into our own natural dyes to print and stain cotton scarves and fabrics.

Food and personal objects act as small reminders of the moments shared between people and occasions.

In this workshop, we will disrupt and rewrite toxic narratives regarding the ‘curry stained’ South Asian body, through reappropriating spices into stains that adorn fabrics to celebrate the power that food holds in our homes and memories.

Ayesha encourages all participants to bring their own old jewellery or small objects from home to rework and repurpose as stencils and patterns.

More about Ayesha Sureya

Ayesha Sureya Patel is a Jewellery Artist and 3D designer from London whose work is inspired by the beauty but also tangled identities around being British-South-Asian. She graduated from the Jewellery Design course at Central St. Martins (2018) and has continued working from her studio in Stoke Newington.

Her practice explores her cultural identity and entails heavily researched theologies and symbolism to help draw connections between jewellery and the self, formality of adornment, and the narrative of personal materials and objects in a post-colonial world.

Currently she is communicating her concepts through 3D artworks, animations and in metals where each jewel gives evidence of a creative synthesis of religious ideologies and themes with modern techniques, creating a new mythology and form that enables us to communicate with and relate to a world remote from us
