The Brick Lane Gallery is proud to present "Art in Mind | Odyssey" as part of our on-going series of group exhibition presenting contemporary art from UK and international artists. The exhibition aims to present a broad spectrum of works of all mediums including painting, fine-art photography and mixed media.

In this exhibition, we welcome back David Whitfield’s artworks for the second time on our gallery walls. On this occasion, David diverts from his monochrome drawings to present subtly colourful watercolours which attempt to show a hidden 'world' of inner turmoil, greed, anger, manipulation, prejudice and the myriad workings of the human psyche, behind the apparent ordinary or even boring scenes of individuals grouped together.

Also presented in this show is Italian artist Elena De Giorgi, whose work ‘Gaza’ is inspired by newspaper photos and interpreted through the artist’s contemporary style of painting in order to represent families affected by war. Working in a similar figurative style, British-Bangladeshi artist Kalpona depicts images from rural life and culture, capturing and exploring her Bangladeshi roots.

In contrast to Kalpona and Elena’s figurative style, Spanish artist Enrique Rodriguez, better known as Guzpeña, explores geometric forms and patterns which create metaphysical spaces and imaginary worlds in his beautifully colourful abstract works. Similarly, local artist Jenna Hook creates simple abstract designs, characterised by bold colours, and influenced by her graphic design background.

Polish artist KamilTatara will be exhibiting a set of screen-prints from his ‘Hero’ series. An ironic title given to his controversial pop-art influenced images of famous historical dictators.

Our featured photographer in this exhibition, Lilli Waters, presents beautiful fantastical photography all the way from Melbourne, Australia. Her photographs draw you into a surreal dream where figures float in imaginary landscapes rendered with a flawless photographic technique.

Another young artist Eleni Pavli presents a series of small paintings which explore the poetry and expression of the body. Her quasi-abstract figures emerge from the elements of air, water, and gravity - and these timeless figures, originating from other worlds, time and dimension, suggest an open narrative and ambiguity that are characteristic of this series of works.

A unique addition to Art in Mind | Odyssey, is two street-art inspired artists - East-London's Denty’s contemporary stencils reflect his musical interests and icons. Working on old timber, these pieces have a unique urban texture which reflects the origins of the stencil technique as a form of street art. With similar influences, Netherland’s artist Toshy is inspired by Graffiti style lettering and incorporates this into his mixed media portraits of famous pop-culture figures.

"Art in Mind | Odyssey" will take place between the 5th and 16th June 2013. Please join us for our event and opening preview on Wednesday the 5th June between 6pm – 8.30pm.
