Mind The Gap

A-side B-side gallery is proud to present 'Mind the Gap', Silvia Lerin’s first solo show in the UK, funded by the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant

'Mind the Gap' was initially conceived as a series of paintings in which the famous warning phrase inspired Silvia to investigate her artistic discourse through fissures and divisions, where ‘gap’ is an extension of its meaning.  She soon recognised the need to formulate her work inspired by this 'gap' - with all its connotations - by taking a very different perspective & approach to what had initially inspired her paintings.  Using a technique employed during her residency in the ‘Prairie Center of the Arts’ in Peoria, she uses a combination of timber lengths with painted cotton to create a site-specific installation.

Silvia explains, “I wasn’t thinking in regards to the tube lines nor its colours but in its literal meaning; the actual ‘gap’ itself, the distance between the train and platform. I began to imagine installations with painted timber, yellow and grey cotton or other fabric, in which the yellow line marking the edge of the platform plays an important role as it both separates and advises.”

This exhibition will present installations and objects that attempt to communicate aspects that stand out of the London Underground and of Silvia's experience whilst waiting for the trains.

Silvia concludes, “As many of you already know; considering ‘gap’, as an extension of its meaning that responds to the ‘gap-moment’ of my personal situation at the moment and taking into consideration the colours of the London Underground.”
