Legacy

Proudly supported by the United Nations Association London and South East, Patrick Altes' timely exhibition "Legacy" addresses the sins of our colonial past.

"“Legacy” seeks to acknowledge the past, stand against exclusion and in favour of equality for all. It offers a much-needed narrative and wants to contribute to a change of mentalities.

Calling for a re-thinking of the state of the world, it advocates that societal cohesion is conditional to a reappraisal of the “Other” as part of the only race that exists, the Human Race." Patrick Altes

"Patrick Altes is the grain of sand in the smooth cogs of the machine mastering the grotesque manipulation of the world. His work infers an oblique consciousness aiming at unsettling the order of things and tapping into our remnant lucidity”.

Omar Meziani. Algerian Curator

Artist ( Description ):

Patrick Altes is an artist of French/Spanish origins, whose work has been deeply informed by his own personal history. Born in Algeria, he has made a distinctive contribution to the postcolonial discourse and the emerging Franco-Algerian art movement. As a young adult, he lived in South Africa for two years under the apartheid.  He worked at the University of Fort Hare, a key institution in higher education for black Africans, which counted among its former students a number of prominent leading opponents of the apartheid. This was his first-hand experience of a society based on discrimination, repression and deprivation of civil and political rights for a large part of the population.  It deeply marked him and fuelled in him a sense for the politically, socially and humanly acceptable.
