In this exhibition, Painter Clare Price presents the photographic and online aspect to her practice for the first time. Alongside her large-scale paintings on canvas will be projected sequences of photographs, which reveal hidden performances within the artist’s studio. Exploring the dynamics of fragility and power, control and release, Price also engages in the creation of safe spaces, both physical and online, in which to make and disseminate her work.

Price’s paintings are often realised in one act. Becoming increasingly performative, the surfaces of her canvases record the traces of the gestures and movements of the body. The photographs that Clare has been taking of herself in relation to her paintings within the studio have investigated what she describes as an “un-containing” of the self from the constraints of the stretcher and a spilling forth of affect from the paintings. Reclaiming the feminine body and the female gaze, the photographs were originally displayed on a private Instagram account, in which the sensual, sexual and autobiographical references of the paintings could be released.

In addition to the photographs that Price has taken of herself, she has collaborated on a series of images by Photographer Benjamin Whitley. These photographs explore the bond between the artist and photographer, and present an alternate gaze, informed amongst many things, by generational and gender difference.

The exhibition is generously supported by Arts Council England and Marcelle Joseph's Girlpower Fund.
