Featuring 11 exhibiting artists, CONTEMPORARY PAINTING explores the evolving styles and subjects in painting. It brings together over 30 works celebrating the strength of this medium within contemporary art and reveals the different relationships that exist between traditional approaches and current practices. These artists tackle a diverse range of subjects, referencing the body, emotions and social issues. Despite these different references, the works are all united by the act of painting.
From bright pink and vivid yellow to sombre black, the infinite canvases created by Astrid Stöppel captivate you. Created upon shimmering layers, her colour fields are of incomparable intensity and communicate universal human emotions. Like a reflection in an antique mirror or a much loved photograph, creased and faded; Barry Wilson's latest portraits have a delicate, fragile beauty that belie the brutality of the techniques he uses. Industrial spray guns, scouring pads and water jets combine with traditional approaches and his trademark gold leaf. The result is a captured moment, vibrant, edgy and contemporary yet exquisitely beautiful.
