Chris Rivers deploys his trademark gestural urgency and expressive handling to describe a world of jeopardy and turmoil. ‘Expendable Youth’ is a direct reference to the sombre consequences of the Great War. The paintings feature masked and mounted soldiers rendered in a swirling, misty impasto of clotted and crusty paint. Colour is acidic and caustic. Nevertheless, the pictures retain a mesmerising aesthetic appeal alongside their telling of a dark tale.
