Living Traditions - An Indian art exhibition

Categories:

Living Traditions is a new exhibition and art educational project with the aim of representing and promoting indigenous arts and cultures to new audiences. Our first exhibition showcases India.

The diversity of India’s cultural heritage has led to a variety of art forms and expressions, often showcasing similar themes ranging from depictions of mythological images to the portrayal of everyday life. Encouraged by the increasing interest of art lovers and collectors in traditional forms of Indian art, Living Traditions presents fine artworks carefully selected from both eastern and western regions of India. Many of these works have never before been seen outside India.

Living Tradition’s aim is to showcase vibrant styles that continue to be produced in India such as Rajasthani Miniatures, Pitchwais, Mithila art, Paattachitra and Sandalwood Carvings. These works have been created by Master Contemporary artists and craftsmen including Rewa Shankar, Asha Ram Meghwal, Lalit Sharma, Bharti Dayal, Chandra Bhushan Kumar, Shanti Devi and Vinod Jahangir among others. These artists command respect amongst their peers and their works can be seen in museums collections and private art collections. The exhibition is accompanied by an illustrated catalogue.

Living Traditions – Contemporary Traditions in the Indian Art Market, SEMINAR 1ST MAY

To accompany the exhibition, Living Traditions has organised a seminar to present to the London audience the richness of these traditions and their insertion in the art market. The talks will be delivered by specialists such as Ms Anita Chowdry (Miniature painting: its evolution and application in contemporary art) and Dr Aurogeeta Das (Madhubani painting: shifts and continuums) amongst others. These will be followed by an open discussion with the audience. Booking is required for the seminar. Ticket prices are £18.00 full price and £10.00 concessions. Those interested in attending should contact María Álvarez García at maria@livingtraditions.in

Living Traditions was started by Neha Jaiswal together with her colleagues at Sotheby’s Institute of Art, Maria Alvarez García and Marta Inez Rodrigues Pereira.
