Global Beauty: Celebrating Women Across Cultures, an international online solo drawing and painting art exhibition by Sophia Mitchell opens on January 19, and will continue for two months until March 19, 2024.
Sophia Mitchell has dedicated her creative passion to capturing the depth and beauty that colors the human spirit. Realistic portraiture has been the center of her work since 2009. She believes we are meant to remember our connection with ourselves, each other, and the world around us. Through portraiture she intends to create a pause in your day by providing a mirror through which to view yourself.
Aesthetically, her focus is bringing naturalistic realism back into contemporary figure painting. Inspired by the beauty of life, realism offers her a way to describe the present moment, and in doing so, her painting is a meditation on observation. She views the creation of art as a fascinating and humbling game of light. She works from photographs she personally takes, and hopes her portraiture inspires empathy and cross-cultural connections.

Artist:
Born and raised in British Columbia, Sophia was first inspired by the abundance of nature and began traditional painting methods at 10 years old. She graduated with her BFA in Studio Arts from Concordia University in Montréal in 2014. There she had the privilege of studying with incredible artists and discovered her love of figure painting and oil. Portraiture has remained the center of her practice since then.
In 2015 she moved from Canada to the mountains near Santa Fe, New Mexico. Here her practice evolved onto the stage with The 3 Painters, doing live action painting. Sophia has helped design & perform in corporate shows from Tanzania to Panama & around the US. She now performs with the touring show Artrageous, which combines all the arts in a one-of-a-kind immersive theatrical production.
Sophia had won multiple awards for her art, and sold and shown her work internationally. When she is not painting or drawing, she is studying music and is a multi-instrumentalist.
