Eruption, an international online solo painting exhibition by Gary Menzel opens on August 01 and will continue through August 31, 2023.

Gary work starts with a brushed underpainting of one to several colors and tones on a prepared canvas. Multiple applications of paint are then applied in a “gestural abstraction” or “action painting” method where paint is brushed, dripped, splashed, and blended onto the canvas creating movement and depth. Gary Menzel is an intuitive and direct painter and depending on the individual piece he is working on, there may be several to well over 300 applications of color added by varied techniques over a period of days to months on premier canvas.

As an artist his goal is to evoke the imagination and emotions of the observer, engaging them with abstract paintings with no real sense of beginning or end, and providing the observer with much to consider as they find their way in Gary's works.

Artist ( Description ):

Growing up in Detroit, MI and its suburbs I was fortunate enough to be surrounded by a range of world class visual arts and music. These influences, along with a vibrant mix of people and cultures helped shape my interest in the arts.

My university education concentrated on engineering and design. Until recently my artistic expression has been as a musician and photographer.

As my interest in abstract art became more defined, it was the influence of the “New York School” of artists that motivated me to become involved as an artist in abstract expressionism. The styles of these artists, which included Kline, Rothko, deKooning, Pollock, Mitchell, and others, demonstrated a voice and an energy with which I closely identify.

My education in abstract expressionism has been through extensive study of the works and techniques of the “New York School” and other artists of that period, and through formal class study.
