Coloring

These paintings are my pauses or withdrawals from the world, from the time of the calendar and the clock, namely from continuous engagements; nay my breaks from art, because even the artistic creation was not particularly interested in me as I was throwing colours just “for fun”, as a way to detach myself from what “should” I do.

I coloured more than I painted, that’s why this series was entitled “Coloring”.

I just felt released from painting or artistic engagement and gave myself effortlessly to the colors, as a way to reunite the child within.

This reunion is beyond words. The most I can say is that everything looks playful when you are colouring, like in childhood. For a few moments the world is no longer grey, but in colors, and everything is for you. When a child colors, he does not intend to do “art”, and that means a lot to me.

It is sad that “children paint beautifully”, probably because they are immune to thought, ideas and concepts. But, later they are recruited in school and start to be uniformed in the name of civilization. The few who survive this spiritual violence are known as artists, not that they do any heroism – they just do their duty by protecting the human from the “citizen”.

I also try to be a child again by “lying” to myself with these paintings.

This reminds us of Picasso’s famous saying: “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.”

All the children color, but later not everyone paint.
