Gallery Reception for Sharon Gottula at the Trap Gallery

Categories:

A one woman show of Sharon Leger Gottula’s photographic series, “Roadside Blooms” opens June 15th at the Trap Gallery in Kansas City, MO. Opening reception Friday, June 15th from 6-9pm. The show is open by appointment until July 6th.

Gottula started the Roadside Blooms project in 2009 photographing in open lots, nature preserves, parks and deserted roadways. “This project grew out of a Scott Kelby photo walk. Here along with a group of about 100+ Kansas City photographers we scoured the River Market area for cool and unique images to submit to the Scott Kelby Photowalk website, kind of a “day in photos across the world” project. One of my favorite images was of some Coreopsis growing next to a parking lot in an alleyway. This sparked an interest in the Missouri and Kansas wildflowers.”

Linda Robinson, gallery director of the Center Gallery at the Midwest Center included the series in a recent juried exhibition and states:

“Upon reviewing the varied entries that we received nationwide for the Midwest Center for Photography Juried Exhibition, a common thematic thread became evident that was on the conceptual minds of the photographers. A look at the landscape and an interpretation of how we relate to that landscape was personal to each of the artists. The series "Roadside Blooms" by Sharon Gottula rang out as an interesting and beautiful observation of finding tranquility in the most overlooked of places.”

Artist ( Description ):

Raised in front of the many camera’s of the 60’s and 70’s Sharon knew that there had to be an easier way of taking a picture.  After a brief affair with Marina Biology she turned her attention to the silver image and settled down to her true love.

The 90’s found her heading to Europe armed with a BFA in Photography and French;  Sharon lived and worked in Paris for a couple of years until finally heading back to California to learn how to surf and in 1997 she opened the doors to Gottula Studios shooting food, architecture and portraits for the travel and restaurant industry.

In 2005 she relocated to Kansas City where she enjoys the lack of smog, traffic and crazy housing with her husband, children and assortment of pets. Here she concentrates on Fine Art photography which she subsidizes with portraiture and commercial clients.

Venue ( Address ):

The Trap Gallery has been showing emerging local and regional artists for the past 10 years. It originally started on an impulse in 2001 when neighbors began a not-for-profit gallery across the street called Art In Columbus Park.

Owner/photographer/artist Dan Frueh and his wife, Christine Stephan, had recently purchased their fixer-upper in the quiet Kansas City neighborhood, and joined their neighbors in hosting some art exhibits on 1st Fridays in what began as the 525Gallery. After 2 years, the galleries became the first in Kansas City to host art exhibits on the 3rd Friday of the month, and were soon joined by venues in the City Market, as well as Charlotte Street Foundation's Urban Culture Project.

In 2009, after a complete renovation of the gallery, the name was changed to the trap. The name was inspired by the building's history as a social gathering spot for the neighborhood, once home to various activities not necessarily endorsed by the neighborhood's Holy Rosary Church.
The Trap gallery showcases exhibits for artists of all disciplines from a wide range of backgrounds and experience. It strives to provide a venue for emerging art makers and a chance for them to grow as artists. Shows are held on the 3rd Fridays April-November. More information on upcoming shows can be found at www.columbusparkart.com.
