Opening reception for Hung Viet Nguyen & Rachel Daly at Lois Lambert Gallery.

Curator :

Artist ( Description ):

Daly breaks the traditional rules of oil paint and meticulously layers “beads” of paint to create an illusion of textiles and embroidery. This unique technique allows a certain sense of creative freedom that traditional needle and thread work would not permit. “My work and my technique of “embroidering with oil paint” is meticulous and time consuming. Each stroke mimics a stitch, and thousands of these stitches create an embroidered image that, when viewed as a whole, creates a liminal space between textile and painting.”

Hung Viet Nguyen’s Pilgrimage is a selection of highly textured and fantastical landscapes. Nguyen draws inspiration from his travels through many different countries and regions, painting landscapes from his imagination, rather than specific places. Nguyen paints with swirling layers of paint, fields of bold color, and playful forms. After sketching out a loose and fluid composition, Nguyen begins building the artwork with a palette knife and thick brushstrokes, layering the paint to add texture.
