“Swag Bags and Palliasses”: New Work by Pip Culbert

Opening Reception for the artist: Friday, October 24th, 6 to 8pm

Show runs until December 6th, 2014

English artist Pip Culbert has been renown for decades by her practice of deconstructing every day utilitarian fabric objects and paring them down to their essential seams. By removing the “flesh” and revealing the “bones”, she liberates the confinement prescribed by function and transports the textile into a lyrical, poetic dimension. For this exhibition, Pip works her reductionist magic on fabric remnants from the bygone gold rush era; swag bags and “palliasses”, heavy linen pouches stuffed with straw, which served as transportable mattresses for the migrant workers. In spirit, these items refer to the current Bay Area “gold rush”, where today’s prospectors are now mining and reshaping the landscape in hot pursuit of the gilded allure of the tech industry.  Also on display will be a series of colorful deconstructed kitchen aprons, or “pinnies”, shown as a playful tribute to our local food culture.

Pip Culbert has exhibited her textile sculptures extensively around Europe and the USA. She lives and works with her husband artist Bill Culbert in both London and the South of France.

Please join us for a festive reception for the artist.
