Anthony Philip Fine Art is proud to present a solo exhibition of new paintings by Kansas City artist Lisa Lala. The impasto application of bold color and the reckless scribbling of the pallet knife in this series of new works, presented here for the first time, allude at once to the chaotic strains of a noisy conversation, and to the quiet musings of a private journal. These are conceptually narrative pieces exploring the transcendence of the mundane through personal reflection.
Text—or more precisely, writing—is an integral part of these paintings. Much in the same way that Cy Twombly scrawled on his canvases to imbue them with a narrative quality, Lala’s scratching gives the viewer a reference point for the work in question. Unlike Twombly, however, she is not confronting the epic, but rather the personal, universal truths of human experience. Finally, these paintings express an enthusiasm and positivity not typically dealt with in contemporary abstract painting. It is as if they are daring us to smile, to exhale the weight we carry, and to inhale clean air and new ideas.
The exhibit opens with an artist reception on Friday, May 6, from 6-9PM and will continue during regular business hours through June 5.
