In Salley’s new show, Nature Lover, it is hard to distinguish where the branches of the trees begin and the limbs of her figures end. The simple forms and gestures become resonant with meaning. The scenes take place just as the sun is setting and the moon is rising, the warm, circular shapes delightfully placed as the backdrop for her figures. Conjuring the fleeting afternoon light, the images echo warm laughter and sweet sadness. They capture the complex, playful moments of being in love.

Giordanne Salley was born and raised in Dayton, Ohio. Salley received her MFA in painting from Boston University in 2013. Referred to by Roberta Smith of the New York Times as a “young artist to look out for,” her paintings explore love and nature—young, nude figures embracing, running, and inspecting pine-filled woods.
