GONE TO THE BEACH

Categories:

Specially selected show of work by gallery and invited artists to celebrate all aspects of summer by the sea. The range of work is enormous but will be installed, as always, so that each of the five areas of the gallery has its own atmosphere.

Norman Ackroyd RA and Jason Hicklin are both addicts of the more chilly British coastal landscape, lately Yorkshire and Orkney respectively.

Esmond Bingham's trademark beach hut constructions are a playful take on that familiar feature of the East Coast; his stilt houses might be a more useful model if the coastal erosion continues.

Coastal erosion is a certain feature of the east Norfolk beach at Happisburgh, where Neil Bousfield walks every morning and draws elegiac inspiration for his virtuoso engravings.

Simon Carter's patch of the East Coast is Walton-on-the-Naze, where he constantly observes and paints the cliffs, beach and sea and Summer bathers.

Daisy Cook is another observer and painter of the mutable East Coast and records the interplay of light, land, water and sky in her 'abstract imaginings'.

Michael Flint has just had an almost sell out show of his Orford etchings at the gallery. A selection will be retained for the summer.

Chris Gough is represented by his happy painting 'Summertime Blue' and his 'Sea Bright' series of improvised works on paper.

Blair Hughes-Stanton, whose studio was converted into North House Gallery, painted bathers and beach scenes throughout his working life.

Ffiona Lewis' current series of paintings depict the listing pine outcrops on the coast of Suffolk.

Mel King has painted a series of studies of the changing weather above the sea at Harwich: 'Cool and Hazy', 'Warm Front', 'Mainly Cloudy, Some Showers'.

Mitsushige Nishiwaki's etchings continue to delight with his fishy 'Trattoria Mermaid'.

Finally, the witty Hylton Stockwell has produced small bronzes of disrobing ladies and a man scanning the horizon (perhaps).
