Christine Hill, described as one of today’s most provocative artists with projects that present art as a vocation, will be coming to Cal State L.A. on Thursday, Feb. 23. She will present a lecture, entitled “Small Business,” at 6 p.m. in the University-Student Union Theatre on the CSULA campus.
Hill will discuss her most recent exhibition, “Small Business,” which features a four-meter-long oak apothecary counter filled with an inventory of talismans for visitors to consider. For more about the exhibit: http://www.volksboutique.org/
“In today’s cyberspace culture of dot-coms and internet start-ups,” said Carole Frances Lung, an assistant professor of Art at Cal State L.A., “Hill revives the notion of cottage industry based on the fair trade of goods and services, and grounded in a romanticized ideal of ‘brick and mortar’ place of business.”
She continued, “By exhibiting the day-to-day process of building the idea, as well as the product, Hill deftly reveals the artistic underpinnings of the social structures of life.”
An internationally-recognized artist, Hill was born in Binghamton, New York, in 1968. After graduating from The Maryland Institute College of Art in 1991, she moved to Berlin, Germany, where she created a punk-rock band and developed and presented Volksboutique. This second-hand clothing store was shown at Documenta X in 1997.
In 1998, she returned to the United States as an artist-in-residence at New York City’s PS1 Contemporary Art Center with her Volksboutique Office of Foreign Affairs. Following her work with PS1, Hill established the New York City tour agency TOURGUIDE? and then developed her first television pilot episode for the Ronald Feldman Gallery. Her works have been exhibited worldwide, and her select Volksboutique merchandise line continues its distribution.
Hill currently lives in Berlin, Germany, where Volksboutique’s storefront operates, and is chair of the Media, Trend and Public Appearance Department at the Bauhaus University, Weimar, Germany.
