Intro to Screenprinting

with Roni Henning

6 weeks, Tuesdays 6 – 9 pm

July 17 – August 21, 2018

Fee: $425 / Includes 12 hours of free studio time

Explore the wide range of possibilities in this versatile medium. Screenprinting allows you to easily print hand-drawn, photographic, and digital imagery on paper, fabric, and other surfaces in endless variety of colors. We will create handmade and photographic matrices and learn to use an exposure unit to make screens, and a vacuum press to print them. Topics will include screen preparation, color separation for multi-screen prints, correct color mixing, registration, screen monoprinting, editioning, and basic methods of printing onto t-shirts and other garments.

Roni Henning is the director and master printer of Henning Screenprint Workshop, NY, and is the author of two books on waterbased screenprinting. She has taught printmaking at New York Institute of Technology, and workshops at Rutgers University, Parsons School of Design, and many other universities and institutes throughout the country. ronihenning.com

Collagraph Workshop

with Julia Elsas

2 weeks, Wednesdays 6 – 9 pm

July 18 – July 25, 2018

Fee: $145 / Includes 4 hours of free studio time

Explore the diverse techniques and infinite possibilities of collagraph—a print made from a plate collaged with varied components. You will build your plate by layering found objects, your favorite materials, such as lace, papers, leaves, cards, gloves, and anything else you desire. We will then experiment with a wide range of inking techniques that will add tones, lines, shapes, and embossments to your images. We will also cover printing essentials including paper trimming, setting up the printing press, ink modification, and registration. This class uses only non-toxic waterbased inks.

Julia Elsas work encompasses printmaking, photography, collage, textiles, sculpture, ceramics, papermaking, installation, and performance. Past exhibitions and performances include: Drawing Center, Ortega y Gasset, International Print Center, Art Merge Lab, North Carolina Museum of Art among others. She was a resident fellow at Scuola Internazionale di Grafica di Venezia in 2017. She is the owner and designer of RE/PRESS Editions, and she teaches printmaking and bookbinding at Montclair State University, and ceramics at New Jersey City University (NJCU). juliaelsas.com

Intaglio Techniques

with Erik Hougen

4 weeks, Thursdays 6 – 9 pm

August 2 – August 23, 2018

Fee: $275 / Includes 8 hours of free studio time

Explore the rich and incredibly diverse possibilities of intaglio printing. This course aims to provide students with a command of basic intaglio techniques as well as an overview of historical and contemporary approaches to the medium. We will work through a variety of intaglio processes, including dry point, hard ground, soft ground, aquatint, and others. While learning these fundamental techniques, we will develop two or three images and discuss issues in contemporary art with specific emphasis on printmaking. You will work on a copper plate with etching tools, print on an intaglio press, and explore methods of color printing. This 4-week course is suited for beginners and also offers intermediate students deeper exploration of the medium.
