DESCRIPTION

Aggregate Space Gallery presents this Friday night offset of their Second Saturday Artist Talk series which serves to lend perspective and a sense of additional layer of legacy to an artist's installation. Speaking around his exhibition Flash Point, a 2019 examination of the 1919's Red Summer, Pinder will give insights into the locations, collaborators, and anecdotes as he made his cross country trek that was captured in the 5 works on display in the Walter and McBean Galleries.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

As an interdisciplinary artist, Jefferson Pinder creates performances, video work, and objects that challenge viewers to think critically about our highly polarized society. He explores the tangle of representations, visual tropes, and myths—referencing historical events and invoking cultural symbolism. His video work features stylized representations of performers working themselves through exhaustion to unveil genuine emotion. His 'action videos' depict physical prowess with the body. The participants, in turn, communicate narratives through the physical tasks they perform. Pinder portrays the body both frenetically and through drudgery in order to convey relevant cultural experiences. To get to the essence of this conversation, he places no restrictions on the tools that he employs, working with materials as disparate as Mercury light and glitter, he explores ways in which reclaimed materials convey rugged histories relating them to an African-American experience.

ABOUT THE AGGREGATE SPACE GALLERY

Aggregate Space Gallery (ASG) is a charitable, artist-run exhibition and performance space in West Oakland making immersive conceptual art experiences accessible to our community. We envision an Oakland where a diverse community of artists can make and experience art in a safe space with access to production tools and hands-on guidance, creating work that fuels critical dialogue in a time when it is desperately needed.
