El Teatro Campesino: Talk with Diane Rodriguez, early member of the collective.

Director and playwright, Diane Rodriguez, will talk about her experience as an early member of El Teatro Campesino. Additionally, she will discuss her provocative project Latins Anonymous that examines Latinx stereotypes in Hollywood productions, as well as her meaningful contributions to theater arts.
El Teatro Campesino was created in 1965 to assist the United Farm Workers’ (UFW) monumental grape strike in Delano, California. They performed actos (short plays) on the back beds of trucks, at marches that lasted hundreds of miles, and at college campuses. Their theater, an early example of art as social practice, utilized humor and satire to critique widespread labor rights abuses and the lackluster political response to these abuses.

Directora y guionista, Diane Rodríguez, hablará sobre su experiencia en sus primeros años dentro de El Teatro Campesino. Asimismo hablará sobre su provocativo proyecto Latins Anonymous (Latinos Anónimos) que critica los estereotipos latinos en las producciones de Hollywood, además de sus significativas contribuciones en las artes escénicas.
El Teatro Campesino se creó en 1965 para apoyar a la monumental huelga de la uva del sindicato United Farm Workers en Delano, California. El colectivo representaba actos de corta duración en la parte de atrás de las camionetas, en marchas en las que recorrían cientos de kilómetros y en campuses universitarios. Su teatro es un ejemplo temprano del arte de interacción social, utilizaron el humor y la sátira para criticar la generalización del abuso contra los derechos laborales y la mediocre respuesta política a estos abusos.

Diane Rodriguez is an anthologized writer, regional theatre director and the recipient of an Obie Award in 2007. She began her career with one of the most politically explosive theatre companies of it’s era, El Teatro Campesino. In 1988, Rodriguez along with other Latinx actors, founded the theater collective Latins Anonymous as a response to Hollywood’s normalized practice of employing Latinx stereotypes in productions. Her two-play anthology, written collectively with Latins Anonymous, is in its 16th printing. As of January 2017, she will have been at Center Theatre Group for over twenty-two years and is currently Associate Artistic Director and President of the Theatre Communications Group Board. Her recent work includes the successful and critically acclaimed production of The Sweetheart Deal, which she wrote and directed, at the Los Angeles Theater Center (LATC).
Diane Rodríguez es una escritora con una extensa carrera profesional, directora de teatro regional y la ganadora de un premio Obie en 2007. Comenzó su carrera con una de las compañías de teatro más políticamente explosivas de su época. En 1988 Rodríguez junto con otros actores latinos fundó el colectivo de teatro Latins Anonymous como respuesta a la cotidiana práctica de Hollywood de usar estereotipos latinos en sus producciones. La ontología de sus dos obras, escrita de forma colectiva con Latins Anonymous, va por su 16 edición. En enero de 2017 hará más de 22 años que es miembro del Center Theatre Group y presidenta del Theatre Communications Group Board.
