FABRIK PROJECTS
2636 South La Cienega Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90034

Fabrik Projects is pleased to present Expressions, a solo exhibition by Los Angeles based expressionist painter Amadea Bailey. This installation of more than twenty canvases, both large and small, is an invitation into a dynamic, multi-layered, world pulsing with life like an urban heartbeat. Expressions presents vignettes of modern life collaged together with fragments and mementos from Amadea’s life and travels; an entrance ticket to a European museum, fragments of foreign city maps, discarded pieces of fabric. “I love the fact that no two paintings are alike, each one has its own unique history, encapsulating a passage of time in my own life. I love the sensual physical aspect of painting, moving across a large surface, playing with deep brilliant colors and building up the surfaces with textures and creating a world from found papers, fabrics, and mementos from my travels and my life. Anything can find its way into one of my paintings, the process is organic and intuitive.”

Expressions is a brightly optimistic installation, rife with intimate details and hidden surprises. Through canvases, thickly layered with paint built on top of paint like graffiti scrawled across old Italian walls, little dancing figures appear, used paint brushes emerge, text and symbols tell secret stories that are revealed the longer you explore.

Expressions will be on view at Fabrik Projects from April 6, 2019 through May 4, 2019. The opening reception will be held on April 6, 2019 from 6pm - 9pm. Fabrik Projects is located at 2636 La Cienega Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90034.

Artist ( Description ):

Amadea Bailey is an American artist, whose work is shaped by a life of travel and adventure. She was born in Gottingen, Germany where her father was working on a PHD in theology.  Her family then spent a year in Basel, Switzerland, two years in Colorado Springs, followed by five years in a small village 25 miles outside of Nairobi, Kenya where she rode horses in the bush, ate sugarcane by the side of the road, played dress-up with banana leaves, and experienced a magically wild freedom. Her time as a child in East Africa is a prominent influence on her artistic voice, appearing in the intricate textures of patterns like African fabric and as a distilled light of an unadulterated sun as it washes across the surface of her canvases in a haze of nostalgia. Her oversized works are thick with texture, layered like the geography of Earth in washes of paint, dense hills of wax, and collages of fabric and paper that build into a sensuous tactile plane. Educated at Yale University and the New York Studio School, Amadea is a classically trained artist with a background in figurative study. She melds these two worlds, the academic and the tactilely intuitive, to fluidly meld the epic sense of drama instilled in her in Africa, with the precision, physicality and compositional structure of her training. When she is not painting, Amadea is equally as passionate about surfing and dance, both of which inform her work.
