Opening:
Thursday, 26 September 2019 - 8:00pm

The Burgundy Room Gallery is proud to present Artcrimes —an evolution of the art pop-up by Cakeland creator Scott Hove, world-renowned tattooist Henry Lewis, and Burgundy Room founder Vanessa Burgundy. Bringing together the best of decadent LA nightlife and subversive art, this is a new kind of experience, offering late-night hours and an oeuvre much different than the usual “selfie museums.” Artcrimes will feature new immersive installations and sculptures for sale by Hove, large-scale murals, paintings and graphic work by Lewis, with cutting-edge, thought-provoking and quite possibly terrifying performance art and specialty acts curated by Burgundy in the space throughout the month. Located on Cahuenga right off Hollywood Blvd, and next to the landmark Burgundy Room, Artcrimes will become an integral part of the Hollywood night-life, bringing immersive art to the bar scene and drawing passersby into a whole new world. And of course there will be plenty of decadent photo opps.

The opening reception will be held from 8pm - Midnight on September 26, and will feature performances by Kristina Nekyia, Brynn Route, Coco Ono, Gregory Barnett, and Katrina Kemp, kicking off a month of special programming. Artcrimes will be open Thursday thru Sunday until October 26, with $15 per person timed-entry tickets reserved at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/artcrimes-tickets-70529620995.

The first in a series of pop-ups, Artcrimes takes aim at the decay of our society in its servitude to commerce, particularly in this current political paradigm where personality and privilege have replaced the rule of law. “In the absence of rules and restraint, culture devolves into a viewing party of celebrities and politicians,” says Hove in his artist statement. “Policy is replaced by outrage porn, and power is based on self-serving gossip. The art and performances in this show do not take a moral position about our current reality. It can be viewed as a guilt-free amoral indulgence, or a scalding criticism of a world where morality has become an impediment to power.”

The Burgundy Room is located at 1621 N Cahuenga Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90028.

About Scott Hove...

Scott's ongoing series of lush 'Cakeland' installations and sculptures describe an allegorical paradise, in the process of re-integrating light and dark, from a false dualism to a true whole. Using an emotionally compelling narrative with delicious looking and fear provoking materials and imagery, the viewer is at once seduced by the promise of 'heaven' while being reminded by the presence of a imminent 'hell.’

Hove has exhibited with Merry Kanowski Gallery, La Luz de Jesus Gallery, Roq la Rue, Think Tank Gallery, Hashimoto Contemporary and more recently collaborated with Banksy to create Dismaland in the UK. His work has been commissioned internationally in the United States, London, and Beijing. Hove’s sculptures and installations have been featured in Smithsonian Magazine, LA Times, Architecture & Design, Food and Wine, KQED, The Cooking Channel, Hi Fructose, Vogue, The Daily Telegraph, and more.

About Henry Lewis….

In constant determination to perfect his craft, tattooer and painter Henry Lewis lives to work and works to live. His mix-matched taste of art, culture and music, the latter influenced by his late father, jazz musician Juno Lewis, mirrors his experience as a bicultural kid, the fourth of fourteen children growing up in the melting pot of Los Angeles. Born in Pasadena, California in 1977, Henry Lewis moved to San Francisco in 2000 to pursue a career in tattooing, illustration, and painting. He draws on a broad range of influences, which includes fellow tattooers and contemporaries, such as Don Hardy, Mike Davis and Jason Schroeder to the art historical works of Jean-Michel Basquiat, Peter Paul Reubens, and Gian Lorenzo Bernini.

Henry’s creative lust is drawn from his personal experiences as well as those of his peers and strangers alike; he is inspired by themes of strength, passion, love and loss. Lewis’s paintings are breathing collections of life experiences, culture clashes and raw emotion elegantly draped in Baroque silk shadows.

Lewis has worked as a tattooer for the past 17 years and is a featured artist at the world-renowned tattoo studio, Skull & Sword in San Francisco, and Incognito Tattoo and Memoir Tattoo in Los Angeles. He has exhibited at galleries nationwide.

About Vanessa Burgundy...

Los Angeles native Vanessa Burgundy has eternally had a hand in the underground scene whether it be art, music, or performance since the late 90s. A prominent DJ, burlesque dancer, makeup artist, costumer, and muse, she takes curious effort into artistic curating and collaboration with a penchant for getting weird. After obtaining her art degree in Visual Communications in 2004 she has worked as an Experience Creator for Insomniac Events for over 10 years, as well as running her own costume and clothing line House of Envy, maintaining  a burlesque and DJ career, and of course running and curating Burgundy Room Gallery. Her vision for this installation Art Crimes is David Lynch meets 1980s Sunset Strip. Don’t ask, come see.
