Littlejohn Contemporary  is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of new work by Valerie Hammond: …I Stole Them From a Bee… The Gallery is located at 547 West 27th Street, 2nd FL, New York, NY 10001 between 10th and 11th Avenues in Chelsea and is open Tuesday through Saturday 11-6. The show will be up from September 5th through October 14th.

Valerie Hammond’s recent drawings vibrate with a low, almost audible hum, as if the insects, plants and animals in her delicately rendered compositions might take flight from the page or, if accidentally touched, disperse like pollen on the fingers. Her images, simultaneously alive and ethereal, resonate as memories do: ungraspable but vividly real. The work in this exhibition, which includes the new series of drawings, as well sewn paper sculptures, revolves around the theme of memory, and, more specifically, remembrance: it is a memorial of sorts, drawn from Hammond’s personal and emotional narrative.

Artist ( Description ):

Hammond was born in Santa Maria, California. She received her MFA from the University of California at Berkeley, where she was awarded the Eisner Award. Her work is included in public and private collections such as the Walker Art Center, The Fine Arts Museum Houston, The Library of Congress, the New York Public Library's Print and Drawing Collection, the Getty Museum, the Progressive Collection, the Chazen Museum of Art, Madison Museum of Contemporary Art, the Grand Palais Museum, and the Fidelity Collection.

She has exhibited in solo shows and group exhibitions in the United States, Europe, China, New Zealand and India. Hammond is the recipient of awards and fellowships from the New York Foundation of the Arts, the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council and the Peter S. Reed Foundation. She currently lives in New York City.
