Venice Arts presents Painter Ruth Chase’s first solo exhibition, The West of Lincoln Project. Awarded a grant by the Carl Jacobs Foundation, the project traces the history of Venice through the life stories of people who grew up here, as told through large-scale paintings and audio interviews by Chase, and accompanying biographical texts written by Gena Lasko. The exhibition is a chance for Venetians—both longtime residents and newcomers—to reflect on the history of our unique community as told through personal stories.

The project was more than two years in the making and involved over 300 participants, each of whom was chosen to convey different perspectives and a broad spectrum of experiences. Like Chase, these subjects grew up and attended school in Venice. Chase worked in ongoing collaboration with each individual to create painted portraits reflecting both the subject’s life growing up in Venice and the powerful insights that arose from this place. Featured portraits include: Fernando Manzanilla, Rhonda Lynn Wise, Solo Scott, Brad James, Meta Zimmerman, Gloria Olivas Omar, David Fowler, Elaine Love Leslie, Eddie Hadvina, Leonard Duran, and Ruth Chase.

In addition to the paintings and audio, the exhibition will feature a Venice Tribute Wall, where the public is invited to contribute their own stories and memories of Venice. To learn more about how to participate in the Tribute Wall, visit:

Opening Reception: Saturday, August 5, 4–8pm

Gallery hours: Monday–Friday, 10am-6pm and by appointment.

Artist ( Description ):

Ruth Chase lives and works in Northern California. Currently she is completing the West of Lincoln Project, a painting series portraying the powerful relationships individuals have with their history. She was awarded a grant to an individual artist, an Artist in Residence at Nevada County Arts for Artist Activating Communities through a grant from the California Arts Council, as well as a residency at the Millay Colony for the Arts in NY, was published in Catapult Art Magazine, Huffington Post, and has taught at the Crocker Art Museum. Most recently she was a featured sketch artist on the Dead Files TV program, and had a solo exhibition at Venice Arts. She is graduate of the San Francisco Art Institute.

Venue ( Address ):

Founded in 1993, Venice Arts is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to ignite, expand, and transform the lives of Los Angeles’ low-income youth through photography and film education, and to use its participatory storytelling practices to amplify the voices of underrepresented communities around the world.

Through its three core programs—Art Mentoring & Education, Gallery & Public Programs, and Participatory Documentary Programs—Venice Arts offers high-impact education to low-income youths, while fostering a space for artists, community members, and families to interact through a regular series of exhibitions, film screenings, and public programs. It is the philosophy of Venice Arts that self-expression, particularly through the arts, has the potential to transform and empower young people to see greater possibilities for themselves and for their communities.
