Contemplando: Works by Carolina Rodriguez Baptista

New York, NY. Porter Contemporary is pleased to announce Contemplando, a solo exhibition highlighting the works of Carolina Rodriguez Baptista opening with an artist reception on June 27, 6:30 – 8:30 PM and continuing through July 27, 2013.

For Baptista’s debut solo exhibition at Porter Contemporary, she will focus on what she does best—intimate bronze sculptures of women with thought provoking expressions and poses. With both freestanding and wall sculptures along with a few select paintings, Baptista’s work creates a meditative and reflective environment.

“Baptista seems to find that moment of perfect contemplation in her figures that either make you smile fondly, weep quietly or burst into dance. You may even want to do

all three,” says the director of Porter Contemporary, Jessica L. Porter.

The discovery of bronze led to tools, weapons and armor. Lead by the forces of her medium Baptista follows the motion and hardiness of the material directed by her own sense of self, femininity and strength. Baptista works through the harshness of the bronze to unearth feminine curves, tenacity and moments of self-satisfaction creating figures of action, gentleness and contemplation.

About Carolina Rodriguez Baptista

Carolina Rodriguez Baptista (b. Venezuela 1971) uses the human form as a central element of the creative speech, where figures with minimalist features express a wide range of thoughts and questions. Her sculptures contain a unique mix of volume and movement that, together with the use of patinas, provide her world with strong symbolism.

Each of her pieces is the result of multiple sources of inspiration, with the most important one being the complex world of women: maker of life, owner of the secret keys of wisdom and intuition, driving force of the pieces that move the game of life.

While she has explored the feminine nature and the role of women in her art, she is also drawn to subjects such as love, eroticism, dreams, liberty and choices.

As a sculptor Baptista works primarily in bronze and uses gestures and perceived attitudes in her works of art that allow different interpretations to each viewer.

She attended Parsons School of Design in New York where she began and developed her professional career. She has spent the last several years between Miami (Fla.) and Madrid (Spain) where she currently has her art studio.

Carolina has exhibited in Madrid, Paris, Barcelona, New York, Miami and Caracas, having obtained various prizes for the quality and originality of her works.
