Matthew Rachman Gallery is pleased to present Tracing Space, Ted Stanuga's first solo exhibition at the gallery. The exhibition opens on Friday, September 14th with a reception from 6 - 9pm and will continue through October 28th.
Tracing Space brings to light a retrospective of intuitive gestural abstractions by Chicago artist, Ted Stanuga. Rhythmic and gestural, Stanuga’s meditative process allows a life of painting to show through. His experimental practice begins with a drawing, where he then begins to curate, obliterate, and simplify. At times sanding the initial layer, Stanuga redraws moments in various colors, shades, and material, leaving aspects of previous layers visible.
Stanuga choreographs his lines to stretch, dive, wrap, and swirl around the surface. Marking each line and brushstroke thoughtfully against the others, he arranges forms across his canvases. Accompanied by his attention to color mixing and technical processes, Stanuga builds sharply composed pictures that are expressive of his experiences.

A life of painting shows through in Ted Stanuga’s abstractions. Starting from a drawing, he goes through processes of sanding, repainting, and redrawing to approach a more specific space in his pieces. His intuition, accompanied by an attention to color mixing and technical processes results in Stanuga’s sharply composed, expressive paintings.
Ted Stanuga’s work has been shown at Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, Brooklyn Museum, The Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco, and the Indianapolis Museum of Art.
Tracing Space, a solo show of Stanuga’s work, will open on Friday, September 14th with a reception from 6-9pm. The exhibition will be on view through October 28, 2018.
