JIM DINE

EARLY WORKS

June 1 - July 27, 2019

Gaa Gallery Wellfleet

Gaa Gallery is pleased to present a selection of early paintings, works on paper, and sculpture by internationally renowned artist Jim Dine. Opening on June 1 at Gaa Gallery Wellfleet, located at 230B Main Street, Wellfleet, MA, Jim Dine – Early Works is on view through Saturday, July 27.

Jim Dine (b. 1935, Cincinnati, Ohio) is a visual artist, poet, and performance artist who is best known for his chromatic and energetic paintings, prints and sculptures of monumental hearts and robes. This work, historically embraced by the Pop Art movement for its utilization of everyday objects as subject matter, is among some of the most revered and recognizable in contemporary American art history.

On June 1, Gaa Gallery Wellfleet presents a curated selection of Dine’s early drawings, paintings, and sculpture completed between approximately 1960 and 1970— an exhibition of geometric and color-driven considerations of material and process. Jim Dine - Early Works presents an essential and pivotal moment in the life of the artist: these works mark the development of a set of philosophies, including the metaphorical capabilities of imagery and the narrative power of objects, that went on to influence Dine’s illustrious career as a forerunner of Post-War American Art.

Artist ( Description ):

Jim Dine (b.1935, Cincinnati, OH) is a major post-war artist whose work ranges from vibrant, large-scale paintings to exquisitely-rendered, romantic drawings and bronze sculpture. Dine’s New York art scene debut came via several Happenings performances in the early 1960s, along with peers Claes Oldenburg and Robert Rauschenberg. Over the past five decades, Dine has created a wide breadth of work: drawings, works on paper, paintings, assemblages, and sculpture. His subjects have included plants, animals, figures, puppets, and self-portraits, and his iconic depictions of hearts, tools, and robes have become the hallmark of his oeuvre. Dine studied at the University of Cincinnati and Boston Museum School from 1953-1955, and received his BFA from Ohio University in 1957. His work can be found in public collections including the Art Institute of Chicago; the Brooklyn Museum; the Cincinnati Art Museum; the Cleveland Museum of Art; the Dallas Museum of Art; the Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts; the Israel Museum, Jerusalem; the Indianapolis Museum of Art; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Minneapolis Institute of Arts; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; Tate Gallery, London; Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, Tokyo; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York and Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, Connecticut.
